Yoga-shikha-upanishad

(Yoga Chub Upanishad)

Krishnayajurveda,
group of Upanishads – yoga

Om! May He protect us both together; may He nourish us both together;
May we work together with great energy,
May we study vigorously and effectively;
May we not argue with each other (or hate anyone).
Om! May there be Peace in me!
May there be Peace in my surroundings!
May there be Peace in the forces that act upon me!

First Chapter

1. All living entities are surrounded by a network of illusion, pleasure and pain. O Lord Shankara, please tell me how they can attain liberation.

2. This is the path that brings perfection and severes the web of illusion. Please tell me how this path destroys birth, death, old age and disease and brings happiness.

3. Hiranyagarbha asked this question, and Lord Maheshvara replied. The supreme abode of liberation is difficult to attain by various means.

4. It can be attained only by the path of perfection and by no other means, O lotus-born (Padmasambhava). The living entities have become entangled in the scriptures and have been bewildered by their intelligence.

5. What is that self-enlightenment revealed in the scriptures? It is pure, spotless (nirmala), calm (santa), transcendental and serene (niramayya).

6. This same living entity is covered by the fruits of pious and sinful activities. How can living entities attain that eternal abode of the Supreme Soul?

7. O Lord, by Your mercy, please tell me what is beyond truth, transcendental to all modes of nature, and the form of knowledge?

8. The egoism of the body, which vibrated like the wind, was automatically generated. The fivefold body, consisting of the elements, was composed of the modes of nature.

9. Endowed with life, pleasure and pain. Therefore in the pure Supreme Soul (Paramatman) the living entity is described in this way.

10. Lust, anger, fear, delusion, greed and passion. Birth and death are lust, lamentation, sleepiness, hunger and thirst.

11. Thirst, shame, fear, pain, depression and agitation. A living entity freed from these evils is called Shiva.

12. Therefore I shall now explain to you the means by which you can destroy your evil. Some say that knowledge is the only means of achieving perfection.

13. How can knowledge without yoga liberate in this world? Even yoga without knowledge is not capable of leading to liberation.

14. Therefore one who desires liberation should persistently practice knowledge and yoga. Knowledge is the only means of knowledge in the universe.

15. A person seeking liberation should reflect on what ignorance is. By knowing one's own form (one's higher Self), liberation becomes the supreme abode (the abode of the higher Self).

16. He becomes free from the vices of lust, anger, fear, etc. How can a living being surrounded by all evil become free through knowledge?

17. Just as knowledge is complete and all-encompassing in its own form, there is no difference in the nature of lust, anger and other evils.

18. After all, what is the method and how can evil be prohibited? He who discriminates is always liberated and free from the delusions of this world.

19. This truth, which is the perfect form, is born from the lotus. That which is whole, pure and complete is the same Supreme Self.

20. In the age of Kali-yuga, the samsara world has ceased to be pure and immaculate like the sky.

21. It is devoid of knowledge of origin, existence, destruction, life force. How did he come to this form in the ocean of delusion?

22. He drowns, O mighty-armed one, leaving behind his knowledge again and again. The condition of worldly beings is like being in the delusions of pleasure and pain.
