Sikkim state is next to Bengali town Darjiling. Sikkim, a tiny eastern Himalayan state, lies in the lap of Mount Kanchenjunga, and worshipped by the Sikkimese as their protective deity. Almost 35% of the state is covered by the Khangchendzonga National Park. Sikkim is a treasure house of flowers, 4000 varieties including 600 species of orchids. Sikkim offers both advanced and easy trekking trails leading to the foot of Kanchenjunga, and white water rafting down Teesta and Rangit. Best season to visit Sikkim is March to May, and September to November. In Sikkim you can hear Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepalese languages. Note: Foreign tourists require ‘Restricted Area Permit’. The Kingdom of Sikkim was founded by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century. It was ruled by a Buddhist priest-king known as the Chogyal. It became a princely state of British India in 1890. After 1947, Sikkim continued its protectorate status with the republic of India. It enjoyed the highest literacy rate and per capita income among Himalayan states. In 1973, anti-royalist riots took place in front of the Chogyal's palace. In 1975, the monarchy was deposed by the people. A referendum in 1975 led to Sikkim joining India as its 22nd state. Gangtok town offers hospitable base to explore the varied wonders of this highland. It’s picturesque valleys, monasteries, lakes and trekking trails, situated near the orchid sanctuary, Deer Park, ancient Enchey Monastery - set in a forest on a hill, Industries Institute - situated near the toursit office, The Research Institute of Tibetology, Tashi View Point - a popular picnic spot and Tsuklakhang - a sacred place within the premises of the palace are tourist interest. Pemayangtse Monastery, houses some priceless antique idols. Tashiding monastery, is built on a hill between Rangit and Ratong rivers. Merely to look upon the Thongka Rangdol Chorten here, it is believed, is to be cleansed of one’s sins. Pemayangtse also offers an unhindered view, of the majestic Kanchenjunga. Lachung a scenic spot with waterfalls, and Yumthang’s hot springs are in yak country. Yuksom, base training camp of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, is a historic town with royal traditions. |
