Mahavakya Upanishad
Atharvaveda
group of Upanishads – yoga
OM! Let us hear joy with our ears, divine ones!
Let us see joy with our eyes, holy ones!
Let us recognize true joy already in this wondrously sent life!
Give us happiness, great one, shining with glory!
Give us happiness, supreme source of all knowledge!
Give us happiness, untouched by the wheel of rebirths!
Grant us happiness, All-good Lord of prayer!
Hari OM!
- In answer to the prayer, the Compassionate and Good One then said: “The Teaching that I impart far surpasses the power of perception. This secret of secrets should not be explained to the common (man), (but only) to the devout, the inwardly turned, who is willing to listen.
- These are the two views: knowledge and ignorance, connected with fetters and Deliverance. In the view of the knower, the world born of ignorance is a shadow, an illusion, dark in ignorance.
- Verily, darkness is the flesh of the five elements, from the Supreme to the immovable objects, the world born from the (worldly) Egg, infinite, boundless, manifested, as all scriptures say, by desire and deed.
- The (Atman) itself is not blinded; he who truly sees with knowledge, just like an arrow perceives the inner primordial light source, nothing else. “This sun is the Good,” revealed by the continuous awareness: “He is I” and “So Ham”.
- By inhaling and exhaling in the direction and against the direction, by long recognition in the Self, the blissful, threefold, called Sat-Chid-Ananda, the Supreme Self is found.
- Filled with the clarity of a thousand luminaries, undefiled, filling the far and the near – this is not samadhi, this is not achievements in yoga, this is not the dissolution of the mind – this is unity with Brahman.
- Even sunlight appears dark in this Supreme Light! Thus, alert and calm, all forms and names are recognized as created and abiding in the One – thus is Shambhu proclaimed, manifesting as knowledge in all directions of the world.
- He who knows this (already) here is immortal, another path leading (to the Supreme) is unknown.
- The Supreme Essence appears as the Great Sacrifice in goodness and in wise compassion,
such were the first institutions, thus the knowledge is revealed in which
that heavenly greatness is combined with this world. Here those who have previously attained (perfection) exist (as) gods.”
- I am He, the supreme sun! I am the light of the sun’s light, Shiva!
I am the light itself; the clear light of the universe! OM!
- Whoever studies this chapter of the Atharva (Veda) at dawn – at night he destroys the sins committed,
who studies in the evening – during the day he destroys the sins committed, in the evening and in the morning – he eliminates every sin.
At midday he who turns to the sun and meditates – he is freed from the five great sins that deprive caste.
- He attains the sanctity of the main goal of all the Vedas, and attains merging with the Great Lord Vishnu.
OM! Let us hear joy with our ears, divine ones!
Let us see joy with our eyes, holy ones!
We recognize true joy already in this wonderfully sent life!
Give us happiness, great one, shining with glory!
Give us happiness, supreme source of all knowledge!
Give us happiness, untouched by the wheel of rebirths!
Grant us happiness, All-good Lord of prayer!
Hari OM!
Thus ends the Mahavakya Upanishad, contained in the Atharva Veda.
