Gopalatapini Upanishad

Atharvaveda, a group of Upanishads – Vaishnava

The title of this Upanishad means "worship (or surrender) to Krishna in the form of Gopala (Shepherd-Shepherd)."

Om! O devas, let our ears listen to what is auspicious;
May our eyes see what is auspicious, O ye worthy of worship!
May we enjoy the life span allotted to us by the devas,
Praising them unwaveringly with our bodies and limbs!
May the glorious Indra bless us!
May the omniscient Sun bless us!
May Garuda, the thunderstorm of the evil and wicked, bless us!
May Brihaspati grant us prosperity and good fortune!
Om! Let peace be in me!
May peace be in my surroundings!
Let there be peace in those forces that act upon me!

Chapter One

1. Hari OM! O form of truth and bliss, O Krishna, whose work is effortless. Obeisances unto You, the spiritual master, the knower of Vedanta, the witness in everyone's consciousness.

2. Then the sages asked Brahma: "Who is the supreme deity (paramo-deva)? Whom does death fear? Knowing whom, everything else becomes known? Who created this world?

3. Brahma replied to them: "Krishna is the supreme deity. Death fears Govinda. By understanding Gopijana Vallabha, everything becomes known. By uttering the word 'svaha', the supreme deity created the world (samsara).

4. Then they asked, "Who is Krishna? Who is Govinda? Who is Gopijana Vallabha? What is 'svaha'?"

5. Brahma replied to them: "Krishna means He who removes sin. Govinda means He who is famous on the earth, in the Vedas and among the Surabhi cows (Kamadhenu and others). Gopijana Vallabha means He who enchants the gopis. Svaha means the power of the Supreme. All these names refer to the supreme deity.

6. He who meditates on this supreme deity (the absolute truth), glorifies Him and worships Him, becomes liberated. He becomes liberated."

7. They asked: "What is His form? What is His glorification? How is He worshipped? Please describe it to us."

8-9. Brahma said: He appears like a cowherd boy. His complexion is like a thundercloud. He resides beneath the desire tree. The following verses describe Him:

10. By meditating with all one's heart upon Krishna, whose eyes are like beautiful lotus flowers, whose complexion is like a thundercloud, whose dress is like lightning, who has two arms, who is rich in transcendental knowledge, who wears a garland of forest flowers, who is the supreme controller, who is surrounded by cowherd men (gopa), cowherd girls (gopi) and surabhi cows, who rests under the sura-druma tree, who is decorated with beautiful ornaments, who stands in the middle of a red lotus flower, and who is served by the breezes touched by the waves of the Yamuna, one becomes freed from repeated birth and death.

11. This mantra should be repeated many times: "Klim Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana Vallabhaya Svaha."

12. By repeating these five names one attains the supreme deity, whose energies manifest as the heavenly planets, the earth, the sun, the moon and fire.

13. A person who has repeated the mantra "Klim Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana Vallabhaya Svaha" even once, quickly attains liberation-mukti. He does not attain any other result.

14. Devotional worship of Krishna is performed when the heart no longer desires any material benefit, either in this life or the next. This is freedom from the bondage of karma.

15. Many brahmanas worship Krishna. Many worship the eternal Govinda. Gopijana Vallabha maintains the worlds. The powerful "Svaha" moves the universe.

16. Although originally the air (vayu) is one, it becomes the five vital airs-energies in the bodies of all living entities. In the same way, for the benefit of the world, Krishna manifests as these five words.

17. They said: Please describe the worship of Govinda, the Supersoul (Paramatman), who maintains everything.

18. Brahma said: The altar of Krishna should be a golden lotus with eight petals. Within that lotus two triangles should be placed, and the mantras "Klim Krishnaya Namah," Kama-Gayatri ("Klim Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana Vallabhaya Svaha") and Ananga-Gayatri ("Kama Devaya Sarva-Jana-Priyaya Sarva-Jana-Sammohanaya Jwala Jwala Prajwala Prajwala Sarva-Janasya Hridayam Me Vasam Kuru Kuru Svaha!") should be written there. Then one should offer anga with sula-matra (astraya-phat). Then one should worship the manifestations of the Lord, beginning with Rukmini, the devotees headed by Indra, the devotees headed by King Vasudeva, the devotees headed by Arjuna, and the devotees headed by Indranidhi.

19. He who at sunrise, midday and sunset makes various offerings to the Deity, obtains everything. He obtains everything.

20. In this regard, there are the following verses: Krishna is the worshipable, all-pervading supreme controller, and although He is one, He appears in many forms. Those who are intelligent worship Him when He stands on His altar. They, and not others, attain eternal happiness.

21. The Brahmanas who worship, while He stands on His altar, the greatest among the eternal and the greatest among conscious men, He who fulfills the desires of many, they, and not others, attain perfection.

22. To those who always diligently worship the transcendental (param) form (abode; padam) of Vishnu, He, in His original form as a cowherd boy, shows His lotus feet.

23. It was Krishna who instructed Brahma in Vedic knowledge in the beginning and who propagated Vedic knowledge in the past. Those who desire liberation take shelter in Him, the light of consciousness, who bestows transcendental knowledge upon His devotees.

24. To those who chant the five-word mantra with Om and Govinda (Om Krishna Govindaya Gopijana Vallabha Svaha!), the Lord reveals His own form. Therefore the seeker of liberation (mumukshu) should daily practice peace (shanti) [of the mind].

25. From this five-syllable mantra all other Govinda mantras in human society have evolved, including the ten-syllable Govinda mantra chanted by the followers of Indra and those who desire wealth.

26. They asked: Please tell us about the nature of this mantra.

27-28. Brahma said: I continuously glorified Parameshvara (the Lord) and meditated on Him for millions of years, and at last I could understand His transcendental form. With devotion in my heart, I offered obeisances to Him. He gave me the eighteen-syllable mantra to use for performing the act of creation, and then He disappeared.

29. When I desired to create the universe, He again appeared before me, showing me in these syllables the universe that was to be.

30. From the letter "k" I created water, from the letter "l" I created earth, from the letter "i" I created fire, from the letter "m" I created the moon, and from the whole word "klim" I created the sun. From the word "Krishnaya" I created ether, from "Govindaya" I created air, from "Gopijana Vallabha" I created knowledge and the Surabhi cows, and from "Svaha" I created men, women and everything else. Everything else.

31. By worshiping Him, Shiva became free from illusion, and by repeating this mantra in a secluded place, he attained the Lord.

32. The demigods look upon the abode of Vishnu, which is like the glorious sun in the sky.

33. Therefore, this mantra should be repeated regularly. This mantra should be repeated regularly.

34. Some say that from the first word of this mantra the earth was created, from the second word water, from the third fire, from the fourth air and from the fifth ether. To attain liberation, one should chant this five-word Vaishnava mantra, which reveals Krishna.

35. The following verses are about this: This mantra should be repeated, from the first word of which the element earth was produced, from the second word water, from the third fire, from the fourth air and from the fifth ether.

36. By performing this sacrifice (yajna), Shiva (Chandradhvaja) got rid of delusion and entered the abode of Vishnu.

37. That spiritual world, which is completely pure, uncontaminated, free from misery, free from greed and all other vices, and identical with this five-word mantra, is manifested from Lord Vasudeva. It is inseparable from Him.

38. With eloquent prayers, I and the Maruts please Lord Govinda, whose form is eternal and full of knowledge and bliss, who resides beneath the desire tree in Vrindavana, and who is this five-word mantra.

39. Om namah! Unto Lord Govinda, who is the form of the universe, the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the universe, the master of the universe and the universe itself. I offer my respectful obeisances.

40. Omnipotence to Lord Govinda, whose form is full of knowledge, whose form is full of supreme bliss, who is all-attractive and who is the master of the gopis.

41. Prostrations to Him, whose eyes are lotus flowers. Prostrations to Him, who is adorned with a garland of lotuses. Prostrations to Him, whose navel is a lotus. Prostrations to Him, the husband of the goddesses of fortune.

42. Omnipotence to Lord Govinda, who is beautiful, crowned with peacock feathers, and who is identical with Balarama, His mind is sharp, and He is the swan in the Manasa lake of thoughts of the goddess of fortune.

43. Prostrations to Him, the slayer of Kamsa and his allies, the slayer of Kesi and Chanura, the object of worship of Shiva and the charioteer of Arjuna.

44. Omnipotence to Him, the cowherd boy who is fond of playing the flute, the destroyer of the Kaliya serpent, the person who walks on the bank of the Yamuna and whose earrings gracefully swing to and fro.

45. Adoration to Sri Krishna, the protector of the surrendered souls. Adoration to Him, the expert dancer, decorated with the lotus glances of the gopis.

46. Prostrations to Him, the killer of sin, who lifted Govardhana Hill, who put an end to the life of Putana, who stole the life of Trinavarta.

47. Adoration to Sri Krishna, adorned with a golden necklace, charming, pure, the enemy of impurity, one without a second, the greatest.

48. Be kind, O blessed one. Be kind, O Supreme Lord. O Lord, please save me, who am bitten by the snake of physical and mental pain.

49. O Krishna, O husband of Rukmini, O charmer of the gopis, O master of the universe, please save me, who am drowning in the ocean of repeated birth and death.

50. O Kesava, O Narayana, O Govinda, O Janardana, O reservoir of all transcendental bliss, O Lord who delivers the devotees from suffering, O Madhava, please save me.

51. Brahma said: As I worship Him, so should you. By chanting this five-word mantra and meditating on Lord Krishna, you will transcend the world of birth and death.

52. One who chants this five-word mantra easily attains His transcendental abode.

53. Although the Personality of Godhead is situated in His own abode, He is swifter than the mind and can outrun all other runners. Even the powerful demigods cannot approach Him.

54. Therefore Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One should meditate on Him, glorify Him, serve Him and worship Him. Om tat sat.

Chapter Two

1-2. Once, after spending the entire night with Him, the passionate girls of Vraja spoke to the cowherd boy Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and He also spoke to them.

3. The gopis said: To which brahmana should one give charity?

4. Krishna said: Durvasa.

5. The gopis said: How can we cross the waters of the Yamuna and approach Him, from whom great blessings will come?

6. Krishna said: Say the words Krishna, brahmacari, and Yamuna will show you the way.

7. By remembering Me, the superficial man becomes profound. By remembering Me, the impure man becomes pure. By remembering Me, the impious man becomes pious. By remembering Me, one who is full of material desires becomes dispassionate. By remembering Me, the fool becomes learned.

8. Hearing these words, they meditated on Durvasa and with these words crossed the Yamuna. They went to the sacred Ashrama and worshiped Durvasa Muni, the best of sages. They gave the brahmana delicious food prepared from milk and ghee.

9. Pleased, he washed himself, ate, blessed them, and gave them permission to go.

10. They said: How will we cross the Yamuna?

11. He said: Meditate on me as a sage who eats only Durva grass, and Yamuna will show you the way.

12. Gandharvi (Srimati Radharani), the best of them, thought for a moment.

13. She said: How can Krishna be a brahmacari? How can this sage be a person who eats only Durva grass?

14. Having accepted Her as their leader, the other girls fell silent.

15. Durvasa Muni replied: Sound is contained in the ether element, although sound and ether are different. Sound is contained in ether. This ether does not know. I am spirit. How can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

16. Touch is contained in the air element, although touch and air are different. Touch is contained in air. This air does not know. I am spirit. How can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

17. Form is contained in the fire element, although form and fire are different. Form is contained in fire. This fire does not know. I am spirit. How can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

18. Taste is contained in the water element, although taste and water are different. Taste is contained in water. This water does not know. I am spirit. How can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

19. Fragrance is in the earth element, although fragrance and earth are different. Fragrance is in the earth. This earth does not know. I am spirit. How can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

20. It is the mind that remains among the senses and accepts them.

21. When spirit is everything, how does one think? Where does one go? I am spirit, how can I be a materialistic enjoyer?

22. Your beloved Krishna is the original creator of two types of bodies.

23. On the tree of the body there are two birds. One is an expansion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the witness. The other is the enjoyer. They are the enjoyer and the non-enjoyer. The first is the enjoyer, and the second is Krishna.

24. In Him we do not find material so-called knowledge and ignorance. This ignorance and real knowledge are different. How can Krishna, who is full of real knowledge, become a materialistic enjoyer?

25-26. He who desires pleasures is lustful. He who does not desire pleasures is not lustful.

27. Krishna, who is free from birth and death, who is unchangeable, who cannot be cut, who is at the Yamuna, who is among the Surabhi cows, who protects the Surabhi cows, who is among the cowherd boys, who is in all the Vedas, who is glorified by all the Vedas, who has entered into all living beings and who controls all living beings, is your husband.

28. Gandharvi (Radha) said: Why did the Supreme Personality of Godhead take birth among us as a cowherd boy? O sage, how do you know this about Krishna? What is His mantra? Where is His abode? Why did He take birth in the womb of Devaki? Who is His elder brother Balarama? How is He worshiped? Why did the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is far above the material world, descend to this earth?

29. He said: In the beginning there was only Lord Narayana. In Him the material worlds are woven like threads on a loom. From His lotus heart Brahma was born.

30. When Brahma was performing severe austerities, Lord Narayana bestowed a benediction on him.

31. Brahma chose a question.

32. Lord Narayana granted his request.

33-34. Brahma asked: Among Your many incarnations, which is the best, that which makes men and deities happy, that which, remembering Him, frees them from repeated births and deaths? Why is this incarnation the best?

35. Lord Narayana said:

36. As on the top of Mount Meru there are seven cities that fulfill all desires, similarly on the earth there are seven cities that fulfill desires and grant liberation. Among them, the city of Gopala Puri is directly the spiritual world.

37. In this city the desires of the deities and all other beings are fulfilled, and everyone attains liberation.

38. Protected by My Chakra, this city of Mathura, or Gopala Puri, stands in this world as a lotus stands in a lake.

39. In Gopala Puri there are the following forests: 1. the great forest of Brihadvana, 2. Madhuvana, formerly the residence of the demon Madhu, 3. Talavana, full of palm trees, 4. the delightful Kamyavana, 5. the great Bahulavana, 6. Kumudavana, full of lotuses and water lilies, 7. Khadiravana, full of khadira trees, 8. Bhadravana, the favorite place of Lord Balarama, 9. Bhandiravana, the great forest of banyan trees, 10. Srivana, the abode of the goddess of fortune, 11. Lohavana, formerly the residence of the demon Loha, and 12. Vrindavana, ruled by the goddess Vrinda-devi.

40. In these forests, deities, humans, gandharvas (celestial musicians), nagas (intelligent snakes) and kinnaras (centaurs) sing and dance.

41. The twelve Adityas, eleven Rudras, eight Vasus, seven sages, Brahma, Narada, five Vinayakas, Vireshvara, Rudreshvara, Ambikeshvara, Ganeshvara, Nilakantheshvara, Vishweshvara, Gopaleshvara, Bhadreshvara and 24 other Lingams reside there.

42. These forests are divided into two groups: 1. Krishnavana, or the forests of Krishna, and 2. Bhadravana, or the forests of Balarama. Among these twelve forests, some are sacred and others are the most sacred.

43. There the deities reside. There the perfect beings have attained perfection.

44. This place contains the murti (statue of the deity) of Rama, the murti of Pradyumna, the murti of Aniruddha and the murti of Krishna.

45. Thus there are twelve Deities in the forests of Mathura.

46. The Rudras worship the first Deity, Brahma worships the second, the sons of Brahma worship the third, the Maruts worship the fourth, the Vinayakas worship the fifth, the Vasus worship the sixth, the sages worship the seventh, the Gandharvas worship the eighth, the Apsaras worship the ninth, the tenth Deity is now invisible, the eleventh Deity has gone to his own planet, and the twelfth Deity is now on earth.

47. Those who worship this Deity overcome death and attain liberation. They overcome the threefold miseries of birth, old age, and death.

48. These verses are: Lord Krishna, accompanied by His three energies and by Balarama, Aniruddha, Pradyumna and Rukmini, resides in the delightful city of Mathura, which is worshiped by Brahma and other deities and protected by the conchshell, cakra (discus), club, arrows, spears and other weapons. These four names are identical with the name Om.

49. One should think: I am spiritual, beyond material passion. One should think: I belong to the Cowherd (Gopal, or Krishna). In this way one attains liberation. He realizes his spiritual nature. He becomes the knower of the spirit.

50. Because He lovingly protects (alati) the conditioned souls (gopa) from the beginning of creation, He is known as Gopala. Om tat sat. I am spirit. I am part and parcel of Krishna. I am that form of eternal bliss and oneness. Om.

51. Parabrahman is the Atma of Krishna.

52. One should think with all one's heart: I belong to Gopala.

53. Lord Gopala is unmanifest, unlimited and eternal.

54. Lord Narayana continued: O Brahma, decorated with a garland of forest flowers and holding a conchshell, disc, club and lotus, I shall eternally reside in Mathura.

55. O Brahma, he who meditates upon Me with all his heart, whose form is the resting place of all forms, whose form is supremely powerful and glorious, whose form is wonderful and who has no material form, goes to My abode. Of this there is no doubt.

56. O Brahma, a resident of this planet earth who remains in the Mathura district and worships Me when I appear in My Deity form becomes very dear to Me.

57. You should always worship Me as Krishna in Mathura.

58. Four types of people worship Me.

59. Following the process of devotional service prescribed for this age, intelligent devotees in this world worship Lord Gopala, who is accompanied by His elder brother Balarama and Queen Rukmini.

60. I am the unborn, eternal Gopala. I am the eternal Pradyumna. I am Rama. I am Aniruddha. He who is intelligent worships Me.

61. Free from all impure desires, the residents of Krishnavan and Bhadravan worship Me by following the rules of bhakti that I Myself have prescribed.

62. Even those who have previously rejected the principles of religion and have become absorbed in the age of Kali can become devotees of Me and also reside in Mathura.

63. Anyone who becomes My sincere devotee becomes very dear to Me. As dear as You and Your sons, as dear as Shiva and his associates, as dear as the goddess of fortune Lakshmi.

64. Brahma said: How did one deity (deva) become four deities? How did the single sacred syllable Om become many?

65. The Lord said to him: Before the material world was manifested, there was only one Brahman. From Him came the impersonal Brahman. From Him came the syllable Om (therefore the unmanifest is one syllable). From Om came the mahat-tattva. From the mahat-tattva came the ahamkara. From the ahamkara came the five tanmatras. From them came the primary elements (bhutas). Om is covered by these things.

66. I am the sacred syllable. I am om. I am the ageless, immortal, nectarean, fearless Supreme Great One. I am liberated. I am changeless.

67. The eternal Supreme Personality of Godhead has manifested Himself as the all-pervading universal form (The only entity is the form of consciousness, light and all-pervading.). Similarly, Brahman, who is one without a second, has expanded Himself into four by His transcendental energy.

68. The sacred syllable om consists of three letters: a, u and m. Balarama, the son of Rohini, is the letter a. Magnificent Pradyumna is the letter y.

69. The intelligent Aniruddha is the letter m. Lord Krishna, in whom the entire universe rests, is the letter of the ardha-matra (m), which completes the syllable om (this is the dot in the Sanskrit letter symbol OM, implying the transition of the sound "m" to the nasal).

70. Rukmini is the wife of Lord Krishna. She is the creator of the worlds and the root of material nature.

71. The Vedic scriptures explain that the goddess of fortune appeared among the women of Vraja. Learned transcendentalists say that the Lord's energy is the syllable Om.

72. Therefore the all-pervading Lord Gopala is the syllable Om.

73. The learned transcendentalists declare that the syllable Om is non-different from the sacred syllable "Klim".

74. He who meditates on Me when I appear in Mathura attains liberation.

75-78. In his mind he should meditate on Me standing on the blooming eight-petalled lotus of the heart. My two feet are marked with a conchshell, flag and umbrella. My chest is marked with srivatsa and is resplendent with the Kaustubha jewel. My four arms hold the conchshell, chakra, mace and sarnga bow. My arms are decorated with bangles. My neck is resplendent with a flower garland. My head is surrounded by a resplendent crown. My ears are adorned with glittering shark-shaped earrings. My form is resplendent and beautiful, holding a flute and a buffalo horn bugle, and bestows fearlessness upon the devotees.

79. When the entire universe is churned (mathyate) by the churning rod of spiritual knowledge (Brahma-jnana), the resulting butter is the Supreme Personality of Godhead in Mathura. That is why it is called Mathura ("sweet").

80. In my heart I meditate on the material world with its eight dik-palas (directional protectors) as a blossoming lotus flower growing in the ocean of repeated birth and death.

81. The sun and moon are the opulence of My body. The golden mountain Meru is My magnificent flag. Brahmaloka is My umbrella. The seven lower planetary systems are My feet.

82. I am marked with srivatsa and svarupa. Therefore the learned sages call me Srivatsa-lalcana (marked with srivatsa).

83. Realizing My superiority, the sages declare that the splendor of the sun, moon, fire and eloquent speech emanates from My brilliant Kaustubha jewel.

84. The four arms of My universal form are goodness, passion, ignorance and ahamkara. The five material elements are the conchshell that I carry in my hand, which is the mode of passion.

85. Childhood is considered to be the chakra, the primordial illusory power is considered to be the Sarnga bow, and the universe is considered to be the lotus flower in the hand of the universal form.

86. The source of ignorance is known as the club which I always carry in my hand.

87. Religion, economic development and sense gratification are the magnificent bracelets that eternally adorn the wrists of My universal form.

88. The neck, which is considered to be Brahman without qualities, is adorned with a garland of the first unborn. O Brahma, your mind-born sons have described this garland in detail.

89. The sages say that My eternal form is the crown.

90. The two things that are above the changing material world are My two shining earrings.

91. He who meditates in this way is eternally dear to me. He attains liberation. He becomes liberated. I give Myself to him.

92. O Brahma, I have said everything that will be about My two forms: one created from the modes of nature, and the other beyond the modes of nature.

93. Brahma said: What ornaments do the deities whom You have described wear? How are they worshiped by the Maruts, the Rudras, Brahma, the sons of Brahma, the Vinayakas, the twelve Adityas, the Vasus, the Apsaras and the Gandharvas? Who is that deity who has gone to His abode? Who is that deity who is now invisible? Who is worshiped by men?

94. Lord Narayana told him: These twelve unmanifested transcendental deities are present on all planets, among all deities and all human beings.

95. As Rudra among Rudras, as Brahma among the followers of Brahma, as a deity among deities, as a man among men, as the destroyer of obstacles (Ganesha) among the Vinayakas, as Surya Narayana among the Adityas, as a Gandharva among the Gandharvas, as an Apsara among the Apsaras and as a Vasu among the Vasus, My wish-fulfilling form is present even when invisible. Whether visible or invisible in this world, My form always resides in My own abode.

96. My form is also present as the deity of ignorance, the deity of passion and the deity of goodness.

97. My humanoid form, which is eternal and full of transcendental knowledge, is present in devotional service.

98. Om. Adoration to the Supersoul who is present in the life breath. Om tat sat. Bhu, Bhuvah and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him, the Supersoul who is present in the life breath.

99. Worship of Sri Krishna, who is Govinda and Gopijanavallabha, Om tat sat. Bhur Bhuvah and Svah. Worship, obeisance to Him.

100. Om. Adoration to the Supersoul who is present in the apana air. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuvah and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him who is present in the apana air.

101. Om ...

102. Om. Adoration to the Supersoul present in the air itself. Om tat sat. Bhur Bhuva and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him present in the air alone.

103. Om. Adoration of Sri Krishna, who is Sri Rama. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Bow, bow to Him.

104. Om. Adoration to the Supersoul present in the air of udana (one of the five vital energies). Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him present in the air of udana.

105. Om. Adoration to Krishna, the son of Devaki. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuvah and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him.

106. Om. Adoration to the Supersoul who is present in the vyana air. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuvah and Svah. Adoration, respect to Him who is present in the vyana air.

107. Om. Worship unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose original form is that of a cowherd boy. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuvah and Svah. Worship, obeisances to Him.

108. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supersoul present in the original material energy. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuvah and Svah. All obeisances to Him.

109. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supersoul present in the senses. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Bow down, bow down to Him.

110. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supersoul present in the material elements. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Obeisances, obeisances to Him.

111. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supreme Person. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Obeisances, obeisances to Him.

112. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supreme Brahman. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Bow, bow to Him.

113. Om. Lord Gopala is the Supersoul in the heart of all beings. Om tat sat. Bhur, Bhuva and Svah. Bow down, bow down to Him.

114. Om. Transcending waking, dreaming and deep sleep, Lord Gopala is beyond the transcendence of impersonality. Om tat sat. Bhur, bhuvah and svah. All obeisances to Him.

115. The one Supreme Personality of Godhead is hidden within everything. He is all-pervading. He is in everyone's heart. He is the observer of everyone's activities. He lives in everyone's heart. He is the witness. He is consciousness. He is transcendental. He is beyond the modes of nature.

116. Worship of Rudra. Worship of Aditya. Worship of Vinayaka. Worship of Surya. Worship of Vidya-devi. Worship of Indra. Worship of Agni. Worship of Yama. Worship of Nirti. Worship of Varuna. Worship of Vayu. Worship of Kuvera. Worship of Isana. Worship of Brahma. Worship of all the demigods.

117. After offering these most pious prayers to Brahma, who was absorbed in meditation on the transcendental form of the Lord, and having empowered him to create the universe, Lord Narayana disappeared.

118. Because these instructions have been heard from Brahma, the sons of Brahma and Narada, I have spoken them. O Gandharvi (Radha), You may now go to Your home.

Om! O devas, let our ears listen to what is auspicious;

Thus ends the Gopalatapini Upanishad, which belongs to the Atharva Veda.

OM
