Garuda Upanishad

Atharvaveda
group of Upanishads – Vaishnava

Om! O Gods, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious;
May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O worthy of worship!
May we enjoy the entire term of life allotted to us by the Gods,
By constantly worshipping them with our bodies and limbs!
May the glorious Indra bless us!
May the all-knowing Sun bless us!
May Garuda, the thunderbolt to the forces of evil, bless us!
May Brihaspati give us prosperity!
Om! May there be Peace in me!
May there be Peace in my near ones!
May there be Peace in the forces acting on me!
Om! That is a complete whole. This is also a complete whole. From one complete whole has arisen (another) complete whole. Even after the separation of a complete whole from (another) complete whole, the complete whole remains unchanged and undisturbed.
Om shanti shanti shantihi

I will preach the science of Brahma. Brahma taught this science to Narada, Narada to Brihatsena, Brihatsena to Indra, Indra to Bharadwaja, Bharadwaja to his disciples who desired salvation.

(He taught them the science,) which achieves good, removes poison, destroys poison, overcomes poison and destroys poison:

Broken is the poison, destroyed is the poison, destroyed is the poison; struck by the thunderbolt of Indra, Svaha! Is its origin from snakes, or from asps, or from scorpions, or from worms, or from salamanders, or from amphibious animals, or from rats.

Be you the messenger of Anantaka, or Anantaka himself! Be you the messenger of Vasuki, or Vasuki himself! Be you the messenger of Takshaka, or Takshaka himself! Be you the messenger of Karkotaka, or Karkotaka himself! Be you the messenger of Samkhapulika, or Samkhapulika himself! Be you the messenger of Padmaka, or Padmaka himself! Be you the messenger of Maha-Padmaka, or Maha-Padmaka himself! Be you the messenger of Elapatraka, or Elapatraka himself! Be you the messenger of Mahaylapatraka, or Mahaylapatraka himself! Be you the messenger of Kalika, or Kalika himself! Be you the messenger of Kulika, or Kulika himself! Be you the messenger of Kambalasvatara, or Kambalasvatara himself!

Whoever hears this great science on the evening of the new moon, snakes will not bite him for twelve years. Whoever speaks this great science on the evening of the new moon and wears it (as an amulet), snakes will not bite him for life.

Whoever teaches it to eight Brahmins, will be able to relieve (the effects of snakebite) simply by touching grass, wood or ashes. Whoever teaches it to a hundred Brahmins, will be able to relieve with a single glance. Whoever teaches it to a thousand Brahmins, will be able to relieve with a single thought.

Thus said the exalted Brahma. This is the essence of the Garuda Upanishad.

Om! That is the complete whole. This is also the complete whole. From one complete whole has arisen (another) complete whole. Even after the separation of the complete whole from (another) complete whole, the complete whole remains unchanged and undisturbed.
Om shanti shanti shantihi
Om! O Gods, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious;
May we see with our eyes what is auspicious, O worshipable ones!
May we enjoy the entire term of life allotted to us by the Gods,
Worshipping them constantly with our bodies and limbs!
May the glorious Indra bless us!
May the all-knowing Sun bless us!
May Garuda, the thunderbolt to the forces of evil, bless us!
May Brihaspati grant us prosperity!
Om! Let there be Peace in me!
Let there be Peace in my fellow beings!
Let there be Peace in the forces acting upon me!
(Om shanti shanti shantihi)

Thus ends the Garuda Upanishad of the Atharva Veda.

OM
