Atharvaveda
a group of Upanishads – pure Vedanta
OM. May our ears hear the good, O gods, may our eyes see the good, O worthy of worship! May we gain the power sent down by the gods! For our benefit the most renowned Indra, for our benefit Pushan, who knows everything in the universe, for our happiness Tarkashya, the possessor of the undamaged rim, for our happiness Brihaspati may grant!
OM PEACE, PEACE, PEACE!
Now let us recite the Surya atharvaangirasa (mantra). The Seer (it) is Brahma, the metrical measure is gayatri, the deity is Aditya, HAMSA SO'HAM, Agni (the syllable RA) combined with Narayana (the syllable A) is bija, the Syllable HRIM is shakti, space (the syllable HA) and further combined with Creation is kilaka, the application is for the sake of success in the purposes of human life of the four kinds.
Who knows the One who dwells in the red lotus, surrounded by six vowels, with a six-part bija, the Charioteer of seven horses, golden-colored, four-armed, holding two lotuses in his hands, (gestures) of blessing and fearlessness, the Leader of the wheel of Time, he (veridically) is Brahman.
OM BHUR BHUVAH SUVAH! That wondrous divine Light of the god Savitar we contemplate, May he direct our minds (along the True Path)!
OM BHUR BHUVAH SUVAH. TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM BHARGO DEVASYAH DHIMAHI DHI YO NACH PRACHODAYAT.
Surya is Atman, the Permanence of the Universe. From Surya all these beings are born, From Surya (came) sacrifice, rains, food, the Self.
Homage to You, Aditya! You are verily the creator of the ritual, You are verily Brahma, You are verily Vishnu, You are verily Rudra, You are verily the Rigveda, You are verily the Yajurveda, You are verily the Samaveda, You are verily the Atharvaveda, You are all metric measurements! From the Sun were born the waters, from the Sun was born Fire, from the Sun were born space and directions, from the Sun were born the gods, from the Sun were born the Vedas. Aditya is this hot disk. In it Aditya is Brahma. Aditya is the internal senses (antah karanas) – mind, intelligence, consciousness, ego. Aditya is (the five breaths) prana, apana, samana, udana, vyana. Aditya is the skin, eye, tongue, nostrils. Aditya is the tongue, hands, feet, anus and genitals. Aditya is sound, touch, form, taste, smell. Aditya is speech, giving, walking, defecating and enjoying. Full of Bliss, Full of Realization, (Himself) Complete Realization – Aditya! Prostration to the Shining Friend, protect me from death! Prostration to the Shining Cause of everything! From Surya the beings have come forth, by Surya they are supported, in Surya they find dissolution. He Who is Surya, He is I. Our eye is God Savitar, our eye is the summit. May the Supporter grant us sight!
Let us worship Aditya, Let us contemplate the thousand-rayed one! May that Surya guide us!
ADITYAYA VIDMAHE SAHASRAKIRANAYA DHIMAHI TANNAH SURYA PRACHODAYAT.
Savitar in front, Savitar behind, Savitar above, Savitar below, May Savitar protect us! Father of all, Savitar, may he proclaim long life!
(One should pronounce) the Single Syllable OM (symbol) of Brahman, (then) the two syllables GHRINI, (then) the two syllables "SURYA", and the three syllables "ADITYA". This is the eight-syllable mantra of Surya. Whoever recites it, day after day, becomes a Brahmin, becomes a Brahmin.
OM GHRINI SURYA ADITYA.
By reciting it facing the Sun, one will be freed from the fear of the great disease. One will destroy misfortune by not eating (while reciting it), and will become purified from unlawful food. One will become purified from unlawful association. One will become purified from association with a sinner. One will become purified from unrighteous association. Whoever recites it at midday facing the Sun, will be freed from the five great sins. This Savitri Vidya, and nothing else, should not be proclaimed to anyone. That fortunate person who recites it at dawn will be born happy, will acquire (many) cattle, and will attain the meaning of the Vedas. By reciting it three times a day, one will obtain the result of a hundred sacrifices. Whoever recites it during the month of Hasta in the sun, one will be saved from the great death, one will be saved from the great death.
Such is the Veda. Such is the Upanishad.
